Are we the light?

I heard about this news piece on the way home and just thought about how it doesn't show God in a good light.

It then struck me of a better way to protest. What would the Muslim communities and people say if we as Christians went out and protested peacefully about the printing of the caricatures? Maybe that's not right either, but it definitely is the more loving support of our neighbors.

  • This whole situation makes me sad, no matter which way I look at it. Your suggestion is a great one. I wish Christians were known more for following the way of peace, rather than retaliating in kind to violence and extremism.

But I guess more Christians think like that old Rich Mullins quote, "I know 'Vengeance is mine says the Lord' but I just want to be about my Father's business." :)

  • Vengeance is His, but that isn't His business which is where we stray. His business is love.

BTW, Have you found out where the poor in Yorkville are? I know you've gotten together with some of the other pastors, I'm not sure if you've met the city council members. Maybe they know.

  • Good question. I don't really know for sure yet. However, I have heard that the apartments and townhomes next to Jewel off of 34 were supposed to be used as Federally Subsidized Housing for inner city Chicago families who have been dislocated by gentrification (i.e. when developers turn low-rent housing projects into high-cost luxury condos). If that's true, then we could have some of Chicagoland's most disadvantaged families living just a few blocks away from us. What an opportunity!

I've also heard that there are a lot more lower income families in Plano, especially in the older parts of town. That might be a place to get involved in loving and being among the poor in our area.

If you discover anything else, any other opportunities, please share. That goes for all of you. :)

  • A good place to hang out might be the little mexican restaurant on the edge of town or the one downtown. Maybe Matt we should chose a night and do dinner there regularly and get to know people. Kind of the hang out, identify ways to pray for people thing.

  • Oh yeah, forgot my comment on the muslim thing. I have to admit, the whole riots over the cartoon thing are doing nothing to get rid of my americanized image of the middle east as a totally violent insane sort of place. I like the muslims I've met here - they seem to resort to words, not violence to express their views. I just get the disorderly society sort of thing, it's outside my box.

Its such a shame and it must rend the heart of God to have his children go after each other like this. We worship the same Father.
