Church name

Okay - first topic up for discussion - the name. Here's the list of possibilities:

Ekklesia Christian Community
Emmaus Road Community Church
The Journey
River's Edge Community Church
The River Community Church
Via Christus Community Church

What are your thoughts? What do you like or don't like? What do the names mean to you?...

  • Hmm, I'm still partial to Via Christus and Ekklesia- but maybe to avoid confusion there would be other foreign word possibilities

  • To the Clawsons- I love that you created a blog. Way to be on top of things in our "age of technology." Anyway, I have to agree 100% with Char... my favorite churh names are Via Christus and Ekklesia. Ari says he like Via Christus the best. Alright... good talk. I'm out.

  • We definitely are still averse to sub-division names, and funny thing, I was surveying people today about our church names, and someone actually told me that the name of their subdivision was "River's Edge"! Although, on the other hand, River's Edge did get the most positive response by far of all the people I surveyed. The Journey got the worst response, only one person liked it.

    Not much response at all on Via Christus, I think for most unchurched people they didn't know what to make of it. As my boss at work said, "I don't know what the hell that means." :)

  • I'm with Nathan on this one. Maybe the other question we should ask is: Does anyone have anything against that name or is God telling anyone Via Christus is not a good name? If we're all liking it, maybe it's a good start.

  • It seems that we are all leaning towards Via Christus Community Church. Unless there are any major objections, I think that's what we'll go with. We'll talk about it more at our next Vision Team Meeting on February 2nd.

  • Emmaus Road is probably my favorite, although since we are targeting new people to the area, maybe having a geographical but non-regional reference isn't so good. Especially since it is not one of the common known place references in the Bible.

    As with the others, I am leaning toward the foreign names. However I wouldn't go with
    Ekklesia as I suspect most people are not going to know how to pronounce it.

  • okay so I just discovered that there is a River's Edge Fellowship of Belivers in Oswego... so another reason not to go with that...
